Youth Nuclear Peace Summit: Freeing the World from Nuclear Weapons
December 10th, 2019
12:00 PM – 1:15 PM
614 SW 11th Ave, 3rd floor
The Youth Nuclear Peace Summit included students from high schools in Canada, the United States and Japan for the purpose of learning about the importance of freeing the world from nuclear weapons. Students worked together to ratify their own Youth Nuclear Peace Treaty, which will be presented to the United Nations Non-Proliferations Treaty Review Committee in 2020. As they bonded through their desires for peace during this intense shared experience, students developed transferable leadership skills for creating Positive Peace in their home environments and they established a youth nuclear peace network. In addition to the Treaty, each team developed action plans for their schools and communities. Lincoln’s team goals included 1) using the new school modernization infrastructure to incorporate and reflect school wide values of peace, ethics, equity, and justice, and 2) to work with faculty and partners, such as the Rotary, to expand the school’s internationally focused curriculum and teaching pedagogies to promote peace literacy, peace policies and peace practices to more fully support students in their efforts to create a more just and peaceful world.
