On January 8th we will be hosting our annual Economic Forecast where the best and brightest will gather to discuss the upcoming economic trends for 2019. We will be joined by a panel comprised of Dr. Bill Conerly, Dr. Tom Potiowsky and Dr. John Mitchell.

Dr. Potiowsky is the chair of the Economics Department at PSU and was the Co-Director of the Applied Economics Research Group. Tom was appointed as State Economist in 1999 through 2006 and again in 2008 through 2011. He brings years of experience taking complicated economic analysis and results, and turning it into a meaningful, understandable presentation for policymakers and stakeholders. He has also published many articles for trade magazines, articles for edited books, conference proceedings, and selections of conference paper presentations.

Dr. Potiowsky received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado in 1981 and a B.B.A. degree in Economics from Ohio University in 1975.  Upon graduation from the University of Colorado, he was an Assistant Professor at the university before moving to Portland State University in 1983.  At Portland State University, Dr. Potiowsky was Chair of the Economics Department and Co-Director of the Applied Economics Research Group (AER Group).  Tom was appointed as Acting State Economist on February 1, 1999 and State Economist on August 1, 1999.

Tom Potiowsky has been active in publishing and presenting at academic conferences in the areas of macroeconomics and forecasting.  In addition to academic pursuits, he has consulted with numerous companies and given presentations to local organizations.

Dr. Potiowsky is a member of the American Economics Association. He also serves on the Board for the Oregon Council on Economic Education. Tom loves to take walks with his wife at the beach and wishes he could find time to golf and white-water kayak.

Dr. Bill Conerly connects the dots between the economy and business decisions. He has the unique combination of a Ph.D. in economics from Duke University and over 30 years’ experience helping companies adapt to changing economic conditions. He was formerly Senior Vice President at First Interstate Bank and held positions in economics and corporate planning at two Fortune 500 corporations. Dr. Conerly was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1999.

Companies have used Dr. Conerly’s expertise to help with decisions regarding capital expenditures, inventory levels, expansion into new markets, pricing, business models and financial structure. As a diagnostician, he sometimes identifies opportunities and challenges that require additional expertise, at which times he recommends a colleague to help his client.

Dr. Conerly is an on-line contributor to Forbes and the author of Businomics, a book about economics for business leaders.  He is co-author of Thinking Economics, a multi-media high school economics curriculum used in 34 states.

He has been interviewed on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, CNN and local television and radio stations across the country.  He has been quoted in the Wall Street JournalFortune Magazine, and USA Today.

Dr. Conerly is chairman of the board of Cascade Policy Institute, a member of Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber’s Council of Economic Advisors, and a Senior Fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis.

JohnMitchellJohn Mitchell

John Mitchell received his B.A. degree from Williams College and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oregon. He is a fellow of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  He was a professor of economics at Boise State University for 13 years, before joining U.S. Bancorp in July of 1983.  He was Chief Economist of U.S. Bancorp until July of 1998 and served as Economist Western Region for US Bank until July of 2007. He wrote US. Bancorp’s regional publications including the UpdateThe Business Barometer, Northwest Portrait, and  US Territory s and was a columnist for Oregon Business Magazine. He wrote Sterling Bank’s economic newsletter from 2007 to 2012.   He currently speaks to conventions and business groups around the nation. He was a business analyst for KPTV in Portland. He has been making economic presentations on the nation and the region for more than 43 years.

John was a member of the Western Blue Chip Forecast Panel, and is a Trustee of the Aquila Tax Free Trust of Oregon, a board member of Oregon Mutual Insurance Company and Northwest Bank which has branches in Portland and Boise.  John was Chairman of the Oregon Council of Economic Advisors from 1992 to 1998 and a member from 1984 to 1998. He was Chairman of Governor Kitzhaber’s Tax Review Technical Advisory Committee.

John and his wife Carol divide their time between the Portland area and Coeur d’Alene.  He enjoys biking, railroading sea kayaking and his granddaughters.
