08-26-2008 Weekly Meeting - The Best-Kept Secrets of SOLV
After 18 years of leadership by Jack McGowan, SOLV has hired a new executive director. Dianna Smiley, a long-time Oregonian and philanthropy leader, will discuss her first 3 months on the job, and highlight aspects of SOLV's history and current activities that provide clues to SOLV's continuing role in making Oregon a great place to live.
Though raised on a family farm in Missouri, Dianna Smiley has lived most of her adult life in Oregon. Her first position in Oregon was at Tektronix in 1984, which quickly led her into the field of philanthropy, leading corporate contributions at the company and eventually heading up the Tektronix Foundation. After a career sabbatical at the University of California at Berkeley, Dianna returned to Oregon to work on the Campaign for Reed College in the mid-90s, and then joined The Oregon Community Foundation, where she started OCF’s Philanthropy Education programs. Three years ago, she was recruited by a national philanthropy organization in Washington DC, where she served as a Vice President. Dianna and her husband decided last fall to make the move back to Oregon at the same time SOLV’s Jack McGowan announced his retirement. She joined SOLV as Executive Director in May 2008.
Dianna has served on numerous voluntary boards and advisory committees, including the Howard Vollum Scholarship Committee, the Board of Governors of the City Club of Portland, and the Education Committee of the Portland Chamber of Commerce.
She lives in downtown Portland with her husband of 27 years, Kevin Smiley.
