What is the DVS Committee?

The Domestic Violence Solutions Committee of the Rotary Club of Portland is dedicated to:
  • 1. Raising community awareness of the extent, seriousness, and cost of domestic violence in Portland, Oregon, and the United States.
  • 2. Providing support and resources to agencies serving victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.
  • 3. Working to prevent domestic violence.

So what have we done?

Some of the accomplishments of the committee include:
  • 1. Designing, producing, and distributing a Domestic Violence Resource Kit for Portland area employers.
  • 2. Collecting used cell phones for use by victims of Domestic Violence in emergencies. They can be used to call 911 even without a cell phone account. Surplus phones are sold for parts, with the proceeds going to women’s shelters.
  • 3. Refurbished, cleaned, and equipped various shelters.
  • 4. Sponsored presentations on domestic violence to the Rotary Club of Portland and spoken to other area clubs to heighten awareness of the problem.

What is next?

  • 1. Continue working with shelters for victims of domestic violence and collecting cell phones.
  • 2. Install billboards in Multnomah County to bring the problem of domestic violence to everyone’s attention. The message, conveyed in an attention-grabbing way, is “Think about it! Break the silence about Domestic Violence.” We are doing this project in cooperation with Philip Burnett Photography and two shelters, Bradley Angle House and Raphael House.
